Elevate Your View

Good morning, it is an honor to be here today and have the opportunity to share with you for a few minutes.

According to author David McCullough, “History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are.” How true that is, and especially today, as we celebrate the 116th Founder’s Day, during this homecoming week. Today is a time to look back, to look around and to look forward.

One of my greatest heroes is the world’s most famous political prisoner-turned president, Nelson Mandela.

At 90, this renowned freedom fighter spent nearly a third of his life, 27 years, locked up in a South African prison. In addition, he spent another 15 years running and hiding from the law he was fighting.

What manner of man would take on such a task—the overthrow of an illegitimate government that once put a million dollar price tag on his head, dead or alive?

And how did he manage to stay sane for 27 years? What kept him from losing his mind?

Today, many will awaken with a fresh sense of inspiration. Why not you?

Today, many will open their eyes to the beauty that surrounds them. Why not you?

Today, many will choose to leave the ghost of yesterday behind and seize the immeasurable power of today. Why not you?

Today, many will break through the barriers of the past by looking at the blessings of the present. Why not you?

Today, for many the burden of self doubt and insecurity will be lifted by the security and confidence of empowerment. Why not you?

Today, many will rise above their believed limitations and make contact with their powerful innate strength. Why not you?

Today, many will choose to live in such a manner that they will be a positive role model for their children. Why not you?

Today, many will choose to free themselves from the personal imprisonment of their bad habits. Why not you?

Today, many will choose to live free of conditions and rules governing their own happiness. Why not you?

Today, many will find abundance in simplicity. Why not you?

Today, many will be confronted by difficult moral choices and they will choose to do what is right instead of what is beneficial. Why not you?

Today, many will decide to no longer sit back with a victim mentality, but to take charge of their lives and make positive changes. Why not you?

Today, many will take the action necessary to make a difference. Why not you?

Today, many will make the commitment to be a better mother, father, son, daughter, student, teacher, worker, boss, brother, sister, & so much more. Why not you?

Today is a new day!

Many will seize this day.

Many will live it to the fullest.

Why not you?

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage?

His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it.He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each lad must come into manhood on his own.

Somewhere in my early years, I came across the poetry of Edgar A. Guest, a British-born American who wrote volumes of heart-touching poetry and became known as the people’s poet. I remember this line from one of his poems: “there is some good in the worst of us…and some bad in the best of us”.
